The Indianapolis Colts have solidified four of their five ideal starting offensive line positions, with one key spot still up for grabs. Following Will Fries’ departure to the Minnesota Vikings, the right guard position remains the team’s biggest concern on the O-line. The Colts are expected to stage a competition during the offseason involving two to three players—including a former Day 2 draft selection—to determine the starter.

Day 2 pick Matt Goncalves in the mix for RG

One of the top contenders for the right guard role is Matt Goncalves, who was used as a swing tackle in his rookie year. He started three games at left tackle and five at right tackle, totaling 566 offensive snaps. Goncalves held his own at both positions, allowing 22 pressures, four quarterback hits, and three sacks. He earned a 57.1 pass-blocking grade, a 69.3 run-blocking grade, and a 65.9 overall grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Given his draft pedigree and solid performance, and with no starting tackle spot available, a move to right guard could be his best opportunity to stay on the field.

Colts confirm position shift for third-rounder

On Tuesday, Colts offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr. officially announced that Goncalves will transition to guard this offseason, as reported by Paul Bretl of Colts Wire. Sparano explained that Goncalves already took some reps at guard last year, making the change less drastic than it might appear. The team is confident in his potential at the position.

“We’re prioritizing him to play right guard,” Sparano said.
Highlighting Goncalves’ attributes, he added, “He’s a big guy with great power and length. He’s surprisingly agile, quick on his feet, and performed well in space in the run game last year. That kind of toughness and physicality is a must for our guards—and he has it.”

Battle with undrafted player Dalton Tucker

Goncalves will be up against Dalton Tucker for the starting job. Tucker initially stepped in for Fries and started from Weeks 6 through 12 but was eventually replaced by veteran Mark Glowinski for the last stretch of the season. Tucker allowed 24 pressures, four hits, and two sacks, and earned underwhelming PFF grades: 48.7 in pass protection, 53.0 in the run game, and a 53.3 overall.

Will Goncalves win the job in 2025?

With the team investing in his development and shifting his focus to guard, Matt Goncalves looks poised to make a strong case for the starting role heading into the 2025 season.
