NSW State of Origin halfback Nathan Cleary has spoken out about his girlfriend Mary Fowler’s unexpected shift in allegiance ahead of the 2025 Origin series.

Despite being born in Cairns and proudly representing Queensland, Fowler has now pledged her support to New South Wales to back her partner. However, Cleary confirmed the unfortunate news that Fowler won’t be attending Game 1 in Brisbane.

Fowler, who is currently in England recovering from an ACL injury, called Cleary on Sunday to congratulate him on his Origin selection. During the call, she made a cheeky request — a Blues jersey.

“I think I’ll have to send her one,” Cleary told News Corp. “She’s already asked, so I guess I’ve won her over. She says she’s supporting the Blues now.”

While Fowler is a Queensland native, her shift in support might not come as a total shock — she plays for Manchester City, who are also known as the Blues. Although she recently spent time in Australia visiting family and Cleary, her rehab schedule means she’ll remain in the UK when Game 1 kicks off on May 28.

“She was supposed to be back last week, which would’ve meant she could’ve come to the game,” Cleary said. “But she’s focused on her recovery now, and while we hope she gets back soon, nothing’s set in stone yet.”

Moses Relishes Origin Opener Opportunity

Cleary’s return to the Blues sees him paired in the halves with Mitchell Moses, who played a pivotal role in NSW’s comeback series win in 2024 alongside Jarome Luai. With Cleary now available, Luai — currently struggling for form at Wests Tigers — has been left out of the squad.

For Moses, next Wednesday’s match marks his sixth Origin appearance, but his first time starting in a Game 1.

“I’ve never played the opener before, so I’m looking forward to getting up there and doing the job,” Moses told reporters. “Last year was a great moment winning the series, but that’s in the past. It’s a new year, a new challenge.”

On linking up with Cleary, Moses added: “Any time you get to play with someone of his calibre, it’s massive. I’m excited to learn from him. He competes on every play — that’s what makes him such a great player. I can’t wait to be out there with him.”
