Barry Ferguson’s tenure at Rangers may have come to an end, but he’s expected to remain involved in some capacity over the coming weeks.

With Rangers’ season now concluded, the club’s attention has shifted to the summer transfer window and the crucial decisions that lie ahead. A top priority will be resolving the managerial vacancy following Ferguson’s departure, with several candidates already being linked to the role at Ibrox.

Once a new manager is in place, Rangers face a significant rebuilding task in the transfer market. Ferguson could still play a behind-the-scenes role in shaping recruitment decisions, even if he’s no longer part of the coaching staff.

Sunderland tipped to move for Rangers loanee

Rangers were already bracing for a busy summer, and the need for reinforcements has only grown with players like Leon Balogun moving on. Vaclav Cerny is another exit, as he’s set to return to Wolfsburg following the end of his loan deal. However, Derek Ferguson believes the winger would be a smart pickup for promotion hopefuls Sunderland.

Speaking to Mackem News, Ferguson said:
“You’d be foolish not to consider him if you’re Sunderland. He’d improve many squads in the lower half of the Premier League or upper Championship. He’ll definitely attract interest from English clubs. I’d expect Rangers’ coaching staff to field a few calls about him.”

Cerny’s reported £8 million price tag has proven to be a stumbling block in Rangers’ pursuit of a permanent deal. Still, the club could play a role in determining his next destination.

Sunderland face Sheffield United in the Championship play-off final this weekend, with a Premier League promotion windfall of around £220 million at stake.

A pivotal summer looms for Rangers

Failing to win a trophy this season is a major disappointment for Rangers, and the club must make all the right decisions this summer to avoid a repeat next term. Recruitment will be a key focus, and replacing Cerny will be no easy task.

The coming months promise to be intense for the Ibrox side as they aim to close the gap on rivals Celtic and re-establish themselves as serious contenders.

As for a potential Cerny return to Glasgow — that now appears increasingly unlikely.
