Crusaders winger Sevu Reece is on the verge of making history, needing just one more try to become the first Fijian to top the try-scoring charts in Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific.

Currently tied on 65 tries with former Hurricanes halfback TJ Perenara, Reece has a chance to stand alone at the top with two rounds left in the season. The milestone-tying score came in last weekend’s match against the Waratahs.

The 28-year-old admitted that breaking the record wasn’t something he was initially focused on. “At the start of the season, I didn’t even know about it,” Reece said. “It wasn’t until I got closer to the mark that people started bringing it up.”

Reece said it felt special to be in the same conversation as Perenara and Julian Savea—players he considers legends of the game. “It’s really humbling to be alongside names like that,” he added.

He also reflected on the pressure that came when he had been stuck on 64 tries for a while. “I got to a point where I was just desperate to score again,” he said.

Reece will be hoping to hit the historic milestone this Friday when the Crusaders host the Highlanders in the all-South Island clash at Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch. Kickoff is at 7:05 p.m.

Other Super Rugby Pacific Round 15 fixtures this week include the Reds facing the Hurricanes at 9:35 p.m. Friday, the Chiefs taking on Moana Pasifika at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, and the Force meeting the Waratahs at 9:35 p.m. Saturday.
