Graeme Souness’ tenure at Rangers continues to be held in high regard by many, even after all these years.
Such is the esteem in which the former midfielder and manager is held at Ibrox that he’s still consulted when it comes to new managerial appointments.
Although Souness has long stepped away from management, a former player who worked under him believes that one of the current candidates for the Rangers job could deliver a similarly transformative effect.
Rangers Managerial Hunt Narrows to Two Front-Runners
Following Philippe Clement’s departure, a host of names have been linked with the Rangers job, but it now appears the shortlist may have been reduced to just two serious contenders.
Former manager Steven Gerrard, who ended the club’s decade-long wait for a Premiership title, and Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti are reportedly the leading candidates.
While Ancelotti lacks experience as a senior team manager, he’s been part of elite coaching setups at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain—closely working alongside his father, Carlo Ancelotti, a manager widely considered one of the best in football history.
Ancelotti’s Connections Could Lure Stars to Rangers
Davide Ancelotti’s ties to the football elite are what excite former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson, who believes the club could once again attract major talent, much like during the Souness era.
“The contacts he has at his disposal are incredible—that’s the real bonus of bringing in a high-profile name,” Ferguson told Ibrox News.
“Jose Mourinho had been linked too, and while he’s obviously a top manager, the bigger draw is the caliber of players he could bring with him—and it’s the same with Ancelotti.
“The name alone is a magnet for talent. I remember when Souness was manager—he managed to sign international stars, and the only reason they joined, in my opinion, was because of who he was.
“I think you’d see the same with Ancelotti. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to play under someone like him?”
