Brendan Rodgers is expected to bolster his Celtic squad during the upcoming summer transfer window. With a Champions League third-round qualifier on the horizon, the Celtic boss will be eager to bring in reinforcements ahead of such a crucial European tie.
While strengthening the attacking line is seen as a top priority—particularly after the club failed to replace Kyogo Furuhashi during the January window—it seems Celtic may be targeting a different area of the pitch. Recent reports suggest interest in a new player, and his current manager has now addressed the speculation.
Guingamp Manager Responds to Celtic’s Interest in Kalidou Sidibe
Kalidou Sidibe of Guingamp has emerged as a summer target for Rodgers. According to The Celtic Way, Celtic are preparing a £1.7 million bid for the 24-year-old midfielder. Guingamp head coach Ripoll commented on the situation to Le Télégramme, saying:
“I’d like him to stay, but I’m not naive. The interest is probably genuine. With only one year left on his contract, the club must consider what’s best for both the player and the team. If he stays, I’ll be very happy, but we’ll listen to offers that align with the club’s interests.”
Who is Kalidou Sidibe and Why Are Celtic Interested?
Sidibe is a defensive midfielder currently playing in Ligue 2 with Guingamp. Born in Mali but holding dual nationality, he’s eligible to represent both France and Mali at the international level. Despite this, he has yet to feature for either nation at any level and, at 26, a call-up seems unlikely.
Having begun his career at Toulouse, Sidibe has also had spells at Châteauroux and Quevilly-Rouen before settling at Guingamp. Known for his versatility, he has operated as a centre-back, central midfielder, and even occasionally as a striker. In 188 senior appearances, he has scored 12 goals.
Given the current depth of Celtic’s midfield and the fact that Sidibe remains in France’s second division, it’s debatable whether he would represent an upgrade on what Rodgers already has. Many would argue this isn’t the kind of signing the club should prioritise at this stage.
Nonetheless, with Rodgers looking to reshape his squad and explore all options, Sidibe remains a name to watch as the summer transfer window approaches.
