Doug Gilmour Named New President of the Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto, ON — In a move that has stunned the hockey world and electrified fans across Leafs Nation, the Toronto Maple Leafs have appointed franchise legend Doug Gilmour as the team’s new President of Hockey Operations.

The announcement was made Friday morning by Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), just one day after confirming Brendan Shanahan’s 11-year tenure would not be extended. Gilmour, who captained the Leafs during one of their most memorable eras in the early 1990s, now returns to lead the team off the ice, inheriting the challenge of delivering the long-elusive Stanley Cup.

“It’s the greatest honour of my life,” said Gilmour, 61, during a packed press conference at Scotiabank Arena. “This city, this team — they’re in my blood. I know what this jersey means to people. And I promise you, I’ll give everything I’ve got to bring that Cup back to Toronto.”

Known affectionately as “Killer” for his relentless two-way play and fierce leadership, Gilmour instantly became a fan favourite after arriving in Toronto in 1992. Under his captaincy, the Leafs reached back-to-back conference finals, reawakening the franchise from decades of dormancy.

Now, he’s back — this time in a suit — and tasked with building a new chapter of success.

A Beloved Icon with Executive Roots

While Gilmour has never held an NHL front office role, he spent several years as General Manager and later President of Hockey Operations for the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL. That experience, combined with his legendary status and strong communication skills, were key factors in MLSE’s decision.

“Doug is more than a Leafs icon — he’s a born leader,” said MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley. “He understands this market, this pressure, and most importantly, this fan base. We’re confident he can unite the organization under one clear, passionate vision.”

Gilmour will work closely with General Manager Brad Treliving, who remains in charge of day-to-day roster decisions. The Leafs hope the new duo can finally push a talented core — including Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, and John Tavares — beyond the second round of the playoffs.

A City Reignited

The reaction across Toronto has been euphoric. Gilmour’s image quickly went viral on social media, with the hashtag #KillerReturns trending nationally within minutes of the announcement.

“This just feels right,” said former teammate and Hockey Hall of Famer Wendel Clark. “Doug knows what it takes to lead in this city. He’s done it before — now he’ll do it again.”

Looking Ahead

When asked what his first priority will be, Gilmour didn’t hesitate.

“Instill belief — in the room, in the organization, and in the fans. We’re not here to just compete. We’re here to win. Period.”

For a team starving for its first Stanley Cup since 1967, Doug Gilmour’s return is more than a feel-good story. It’s a declaration of intent.
