Well-regarded Ex-Sheffield Wednesday Boss Departs Long-Term Position
A former Sheffield Wednesday manager has stepped down from a long-serving role at a Premier League club.
Stuart Gray, who led the Owls in 84 matches between November 2013 and the summer of 2015, has left his post at Fulham after nearly a decade. Gray was replaced at Hillsborough when Dejphon Chansiri assumed control of the club and brought in Carlos Carvalhal as part of a major investment drive that led to consecutive play-off campaigns.
Now 65, Gray initially joined Wednesday as Dave Jones’ assistant and played a key part in their 2012 promotion from League One, beating city rivals Sheffield United in the process. In his only full season in charge, he guided the club to a 13th-place Championship finish—their best in six years—and helped equal the club’s clean sheet record for a single campaign.
Since leaving Hillsborough, Gray has not returned to management but remains highly respected within coaching circles. His career includes managerial stints with Southampton and Northampton Town, as well as caretaker roles at Aston Villa, Wolves, Burnley, and Portsmouth.
He joined Fulham shortly after his Wednesday exit and served under several managers, including Slaviša Jokanović, Claudio Ranieri, Scott Parker, and Marco Silva. Known for his defensive acumen, Gray has been a trusted figure at Craven Cottage and remains popular among both Fulham and Wednesday fans.
Confirming his exit in a Friday morning announcement, Fulham said: “Stuart Gray, an integral member of the coaching staff for the better part of a decade, will be stepping down from his role at Fulham. We’d like to wish Stuart all the very best, and we look forward to welcoming him back to the Cottage in the future.”
