Rangers appear to be closing in on appointing a new manager following recent developments.
One of the leading contenders is Real Madrid assistant coach Davide Ancelotti, whose candidacy gained traction after Barry Ferguson stepped down from his interim role at Ibrox.
Initially, the Italian was expected to join his father, Carlo Ancelotti, as part of Brazil’s coaching setup—a move that would have ruled him out of the Rangers job. However, in a surprising twist, Davide is now reportedly eager to launch his managerial career this summer.
This comes after journalist Guillem Balague revealed on 21 May that the Rangers shortlist had been narrowed down to Ancelotti and former manager Steven Gerrard. Just two days later, Real Madrid confirmed that Carlo Ancelotti would be leaving his post at the end of the season. The club thanked him for his contributions, hailing him as one of the most iconic figures in both club and global football history.
With his father’s departure now official, the 35-year-old Ancelotti could be free to take charge in Govan—provided he sees it as the right step for his career.
While Ancelotti would bring fresh ideas and strong connections that could benefit Rangers in the transfer market, his lack of managerial experience makes him a gamble. His time working alongside his father at top European clubs has given him valuable exposure, but taking the reins at Rangers would be a significant leap.
In contrast, Steven Gerrard represents a more proven option. The former Ibrox boss led the team to an unbeaten league campaign and the Premiership title in 2020–21. His return would likely be welcomed by fans, though he would face a tougher challenge this time, with Brendan Rodgers having built a stronger Celtic squad.
Regardless of who is chosen, the decision needs to be made swiftly. With substantial squad rebuilding ahead, Rangers can’t afford delays in filling the managerial position.
