Celtic vs Aberdeen Hampden Clash Determines £5 Million Conference League Windfall

Aberdeen’s stunning Scottish Cup final victory over Celtic has not only shocked the nation but significantly impacted the European prospects of Hibernian.

The result means Hibs will now begin their European campaign earlier than originally anticipated, despite securing third place in the Scottish Premiership—an impressive feat for a side that was rooted to the bottom of the table just six months ago under David Gray’s leadership.

Yet, while Hibernian have earned the title of “Best of the Rest” behind Celtic and Rangers, it is Aberdeen who now reap the greater reward. Thanks to their Scottish Cup triumph, Jimmy Thelin’s side have guaranteed European group-stage football until at least January 2026.

Today’s final offered more than just silverware—it determined who would enter the Europa League play-offs in August. Although Celtic were favourites, their defeat means Aberdeen will take that spot and, even if they fall short in the play-offs, they will drop straight into the Europa Conference League group stage. That guarantees them eight European fixtures and a minimum windfall of £5 million.

What the Cup Final Means for Hibs’ European Path

For Hibernian, the path is now much more arduous. Gray’s side will enter European competition in the Europa League’s second qualifying round in late July, requiring two rounds of victories just to reach the play-off stage and earn a shot at the Conference League’s league phase.

Still, the potential rewards remain considerable—qualifying for the group stage of the Conference League alone brings in over £3 million, not including earnings from match results and ticket sales.

Despite the setback, Gray remains optimistic:
“At the start of the season, the goal for every player who joins this club is to compete in Europe. I was fortunate to do it during my playing days, and now as a coach, I know how special those nights are,” he said.

“Playing in Europe isn’t something every footballer gets to experience. Even players in England can have long careers without ever getting the chance. The matches in the new format could bring some incredible ties, and we’ll give everything to be part of that.”

Hibernian’s European journey may now be more challenging, but the club remains determined to earn its place among the continent’s elite—and reap the financial and sporting rewards that come with it.
