Jack Butland Rejects Manchester United Move to Commit Future to Rangers
Rangers fans have been handed a major boost ahead of the summer rebuild, as star goalkeeper Jack Butland has reportedly rejected a blockbuster move to Manchester United in favour of staying at Ibrox for the 2025/26 campaign.
The 32-year-old, who was one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise disappointing season for the Gers, has told the Rangers board and supporters that he remains fully committed to the club’s long-term vision—despite receiving a lucrative offer from the English giants.
Manchester United had reportedly made Butland a top target in their search for a reliable backup and potential successor to current No. 1 André Onana. According to sources close to the negotiations, the Red Devils were prepared to offer Butland a three-year deal worth in excess of £75,000 per week, along with the promise of Champions League football and a return to the Premier League spotlight.
Butland, who spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Old Trafford but didn’t feature in a competitive fixture, has flourished since making a permanent switch to Rangers in 2023. His commanding presence, shot-stopping prowess, and vocal leadership have made him a fan favourite at Ibrox—and it’s clear that the former England international values that status over a return to Manchester.
Speaking to RangersTV, Butland confirmed the approach and explained his reasons for staying:
“Of course, it’s flattering when a club like Manchester United comes calling—especially after being there before. But my heart is here in Glasgow. Rangers gave me the platform to play regularly again and rediscover my best form. I’ve built something special here, and I’m not done yet.”
He continued:
“We had a tough season, and I feel a personal responsibility to help get this club back to the top. I’ve made a home here. The fans, the staff, the boys in the dressing room—this club means something to me.”
Butland’s decision has been met with widespread praise across the Rangers community, with supporters taking to social media to express their admiration for his loyalty and commitment. Manager Barry Ferguson, who is set to oversee a massive squad overhaul this summer, described the goalkeeper’s decision as “priceless.”
“Jack staying is bigger than any signing we could make this summer,” Ferguson told Sky Sports. “In a time where players chase money or status, he’s chosen passion and purpose. That tells you everything you need to know about him.”
Butland made 45 appearances in all competitions for Rangers this season, keeping 16 clean sheets and earning multiple Man of the Match awards. His consistency and leadership were key in helping Rangers secure European qualification despite an underwhelming league campaign.
With a new era underway at Ibrox under Ferguson, Butland’s decision to remain part of the project signals intent—and could serve as a rallying point for both the dressing room and the fan base.
As one supporter put it:
“Turning down Manchester United to stay at Rangers? That’s not just loyalty. That’s legend material.”
