Rangers Fans Take Joy in Celtic’s Scottish Cup Final Collapse

Rangers supporters found a rare moment of satisfaction this weekend following Celtic’s dramatic Scottish Cup final defeat to Aberdeen on Saturday.

The Hampden Park showdown on May 24 saw Brendan Rodgers’ side go up against Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen, with the Dons emerging victorious after a tense penalty shootout. Celtic’s dreams of a domestic treble were dashed when Dimitar Mitov saved a crucial penalty from Alistair Johnston, sparking wild celebrations among Aberdeen’s players and fans.

For Rangers fans, it was a welcome sight after a challenging end to the season under interim manager Barry Ferguson. Despite their own frustrations, watching their biggest rivals fall short at the final hurdle has provided a morale boost in Govan.

Mockery of Parkhead Celebrations Falls Flat

What has made the defeat even sweeter for the Ibrox faithful are the scenes from Celtic Park that surfaced after the final. Images showed staff dismantling a stage set up in anticipation of a treble-winning celebration in Glasgow’s east end, which has now been put on hold in embarrassing fashion.

The early preparations for a party that never materialized have become a source of amusement for Rangers fans, who are relishing the unexpected twist. The premature dismantling of the setup has been mocked heavily online, as Gers fans revel in Celtic’s miscalculated confidence.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton didn’t help the situation with a post on X (formerly Twitter) that was meant to be gracious but came across as patronizing. Sutton wrote:
“Well played, Aberdeen and Jimmy Thelin. Mitov was outstanding in the shootout. Not easy winning trebles and in recent times Celtic have made it look easy, but as shown today, it is anything but. Still an outstanding season for Celtic, but Aberdeen deserve their day.”

Sutton’s remarks, intended as a compliment, have drawn ridicule for their tone, especially as they seemingly downplay Aberdeen’s achievement.

Rangers Fans Seize Rare Opportunity

While some may argue that Rangers fans have little room to gloat given Celtic’s consistent success, it’s only natural for them to enjoy any moment that dents the dominance of their Glasgow rivals.

The Ibrox faithful have taken every chance to celebrate Celtic’s recent stumbles—from Hamza Igamane’s winner at Parkhead earlier in the season to this most recent cup final upset.

Looking ahead, with the potential arrival of Davide Ancelotti as permanent manager, Rangers fans are hopeful of a resurgence and more opportunities to challenge Celtic’s domestic supremacy—and perhaps enjoy a few more moments like this along the way.
