Celtic have reportedly told third-choice goalkeeper Scott Bain that he is free to leave the club, bringing an end to his six-year stint in Glasgow.

The 33-year-old, who joined from Dundee in 2018, had a year remaining on his contract, but both parties have agreed to terminate the deal early, allowing Bain to depart on a free transfer in search of regular playing time.

Bain made 78 appearances for Celtic across all competitions and was once seen as a reliable backup. However, his role diminished following the arrivals of Joe Hart and, more recently, Kasper Schmeichel. With Viljami Sinisalo also leapfrogging him in the pecking order, Bain found himself completely out of the first-team picture.

His exit marks the conclusion of a chapter in which he was part of multiple title-winning and cup-contending squads, even if he rarely held down the number one jersey for long stretches.

The goalkeeper position at Celtic has undergone a transformation in recent seasons. Schmeichel has cemented his place as Brendan Rodgers’ first choice, while Sinisalo is proving to be more than just a backup — matching Schmeichel in performance levels.

Celtic are already preparing to fill Bain’s vacancy, with former Aberdeen keeper Ross Doohan expected to return to Parkhead on a free transfer. Doohan, a Celtic academy graduate, is viewed as a cost-effective and reliable addition to the squad.

Bain’s departure, while expected due to his lack of game time, paves the way for a refreshed goalkeeping lineup ahead of the 2025/26 season. Throughout his time at the club, Bain has been a model professional and leaves with the club’s appreciation and best wishes.
