Steven Gerrard linked with Ibrox return following Barry Ferguson’s exit
Speculation is growing around Steven Gerrard possibly returning to manage Rangers after Barry Ferguson’s departure from the club.
Gerrard, who famously led Rangers to their most recent league title, has since taken on managerial roles at Aston Villa and Saudi side Al-Ettifaq. However, neither spell proved particularly successful, and he is currently without a club. He’s now being mentioned as a contender to take over at Ibrox once again.
Recently, Gerrard was seen at Anfield during Liverpool’s final match of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace on Sunday, 25 May. The champions faced the FA Cup winners in a celebratory fixture where both teams exchanged guard of honour tributes.
The Sun reported Gerrard was among a host of former Liverpool players and managers in attendance. His appearance follows a recent trip to Bahrain, although it’s unclear whether his return to the UK is related to the vacant managerial position at Rangers.
Davide Ancelotti could appeal more to Rangers fans than Gerrard
There’s a growing sense that Davide Ancelotti might excite the Rangers fanbase more than a Gerrard comeback. At 35, the son of coaching legend Carlo Ancelotti brings a modern tactical approach and significant experience from his assistant roles at elite clubs such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Napoli.
With a reputation for innovation and strong links to top-level talent, Davide’s arrival would signal a bold new direction, especially with a potential 49ers-led takeover promising fresh investment and ambition at Ibrox.
While Gerrard remains a cherished figure at the club for his title-winning 2020/21 campaign, his recent managerial record may cause some hesitation. Ancelotti, on the other hand, represents untapped potential and the kind of progressive leadership many fans believe is needed to mount a serious challenge to Celtic and thrive in European competition.
