Gretar Steinsson key figure as Rangers target Davide Ancelotti for managerial role

Gretar Steinsson is playing a pivotal role in Rangers’ pursuit of Davide Ancelotti as their next permanent manager.

Following the mid-season dismissal of Philippe Clement, Rangers installed former midfielder Barry Ferguson as interim boss. Ferguson oversaw his final game in charge—a 1-1 draw against Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership on 17 May.

Ancelotti has emerged as a strong candidate for the Ibrox job, especially after stepping down from his role as assistant manager at Real Madrid.

With Rangers’ season essentially concluded, the long-running search for a new manager is expected to be resolved soon.

According to Keith Jackson of the Daily Record (27 May), Steinsson has been instrumental in the club’s efforts to secure a new manager and is believed to have travelled to Madrid to assess the 35-year-old Italian’s suitability for the role.

Currently serving as Leeds United’s technical director, the former Iceland international has played a major part in discussions regarding the managerial appointment. Given Ancelotti’s lack of senior managerial experience, Steinsson’s cautious approach is understandable.

Concerns among Ibrox faithful over Ancelotti’s inexperience

Many Rangers supporters are reportedly skeptical about Ancelotti’s credentials due to his limited track record as a head coach. With Brendan Rodgers once again asserting dominance at Celtic, fans are desperate for a manager capable of rivalling the Northern Irishman.

Meanwhile, Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, who are edging closer to a full takeover of the club, may have a different vision for the team’s leadership. Supporters are hopeful the American group—who’ve had success with Leeds United—can replicate that impact in Glasgow.

However, with frustration mounting over the delay in both the managerial appointment and the ownership transition, the board must offer clarity and optimism.

Should Ancelotti land the role, his tenure could either prove to be a bold successor an underwhelming gamble.
