NZ Rugby Warns Against ‘Run It Straight’ Challenge After Teenager’s Death

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has issued a strong warning against participating in the viral ‘Run It Straight’ challenge following the tragic death of 19-year-old Ryan Satterthwaite earlier this week.

Satterthwaite suffered a fatal head injury during the informal game, which involves two players — one on attack, the other on defence — colliding in a full-speed tackle attempt or try-scoring effort. While this incident occurred outside of an official setting, the challenge has gained significant popularity on social media platforms like TikTok, particularly in Australia and New Zealand.

In response to the tragedy, NZR released a statement urging the public to avoid such dangerous activities.

NZR Statement

“New Zealand Rugby extends heartfelt condolences to Ryan Satterthwaite’s whānau and community,” the statement read.
“We strongly advise against taking part in Run It Straight challenges or competitions due to the high risk of serious injury.
Anyone interested in contact sports should join a registered school or club team, where they can learn tackling techniques and evasive skills in a controlled, safe environment.”

Ardie Savea Urges Caution

All Blacks star and reigning World Rugby Player of the Year, Ardie Savea, also addressed the incident, expressing his sympathy and concern.

“First and foremost, my condolences go out to the young brother who passed away and his whānau. It’s devastating,” Savea said.
“I just want to encourage everyone to stay safe and avoid unnecessary risks. No one should lose their life over something like this.”

Seeing Both Perspectives

Savea admitted he and his brother, former All Blacks winger Julian Savea, used to play similar backyard games growing up.

“It’s a tough situation. I don’t know what safety measures are being taken, especially around head protection,” he said.
“I understand why people do it — we used to do ‘run it straights’ in the backyard, and that’s part of what shaped me as a player. So I see both sides.
But in the end, I just want to stress the importance of safety.”

The incident has sparked broader conversations about the risks involved in unsupervised contact sports and the role of social media in promoting dangerous challenges.
