Young Duo Sign On as Hearts Set Sights on SPFL Ambitions

Hearts have reinforced their faith in rising stars Matty Gillies and Owen Muirhead, with the teenagers penning fresh contracts as they look to break into the first team. Both 18-year-olds will continue their progression with the club’s B team, aiming to take the next step under coach Angus Beith’s guidance.

Centre-back Gillies has committed to a two-year deal, while central midfielder Muirhead has agreed to a one-year extension. Having come through the Riccarton youth academy, they’re striving to follow in the footsteps of fellow graduates James Wilson, Adam Forrester, Macaulay Tait, Aidan Denholm, and Finlay Pollock.

Speaking to the official Hearts website, Beith expressed his satisfaction with the duo’s progress and potential. On Gillies, he said:

“We’re really pleased Matty has extended his stay for another two years. Since entering the full-time setup, he’s displayed excellent attitude and determination to improve daily. The new deal reflects the potential we see in him, and now it’s about helping him continue to develop both on and off the pitch.”

On Muirhead, Beith added:

“Owen’s one-year extension is great news. Despite facing injury challenges last season, he showed flashes of real talent and drive. It was great to have him back before the season ended, and we’re excited to see what he brings in pre-season. The coaching team is fully behind him as he continues to grow.”

Club Statement Highlights Progress and Promise

In their official announcement, Hearts praised the progress the young duo have made within the club’s development system. Both players transitioned from the Under-18s to establish themselves in the B team setup under Beith’s watch.

The club stated:

“Hearts are pleased to confirm that B Team players Matty Gillies and Owen Muirhead have signed new contracts. Both players have risen through the ranks of the Hearts Academy. Muirhead, who started the campaign with the U18s, worked his way into the B team and made 10 Lowland League appearances, scoring twice.

“Gillies, a regular for the B Team, has often featured in midfield, though he has also filled in at centre-back. The Scotland youth international appeared in 30 matches last season and also found the net on two occasions.

“Both players now have another season ahead to continue their development in maroon.”
