Ianis Hagi Set to Depart Rangers After Five-Year Spell
Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi will part ways with the club this summer as his contract comes to an end, allowing him to leave Ibrox on a free transfer after more than five years in Glasgow.
The Romanian international is now free to negotiate with interested clubs, and discussions regarding his next destination are already underway.
At 26, Hagi has been urged to carefully consider his next move, with some clear advice offered on where his future should — and shouldn’t — lie.
Guidance Offered on Hagi’s Future After Rangers Exit
Hagi originally joined Rangers in 2020 for £4 million following an impressive loan stint from Belgian side Genk. Over his time with the Scottish giants, he made 130 appearances and was involved in 48 goals.
Despite his early impact, the attacking midfielder fell down the pecking order at Ibrox and spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Spanish club Alaves. There, he featured in 32 matches across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing seven assists.
Reflecting on Hagi’s future, former Romania international Ciprian Marica suggested that Spain would be an ideal destination. Speaking to DigiSport.Ro, Marica cautioned against a return to Romania, even though Hagi could easily join his father’s club, Farul Constanța.
“It should be the very last option for him to return home,” Marica said. “The door is always open at Farul, but he should stay abroad. I still believe Spain suits him best. If he gets another chance there, I see him thriving.”
A Lasting Impact at Ibrox
Hagi leaves behind a significant legacy at Rangers, most notably as a key member of Steven Gerrard’s title-winning side in the 2020/21 season — the club’s first Scottish Premiership crown in a decade. He contributed 17 goal involvements during that memorable campaign.
Though his recent years at the club were less prominent, Hagi’s contributions will be remembered as Rangers begin a new chapter. With plenty still to offer, a fresh start — particularly in Spain — could help him rediscover his best form.
