Andrew Cavenagh Takes Chairman Role as Rangers’ Takeover Finalised
Andrew Cavenagh has been instrumental in the successful takeover of Rangers by the American-led 49ers Enterprises consortium, which was officially completed on Friday, 30 May. The US business magnate will now step into the role of Board Chairman at Ibrox.
Joining him on the board is Paraag Marathe, who will serve as Vice Chairman, marking the start of a new era for the club under American leadership.
Managerial Search Intensifies
One of the first major tasks for the new ownership group is to appoint a permanent manager. Barry Ferguson, who had stepped in on an interim basis, will not be considered for the full-time role.
According to The Scottish Sun (31 May), Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin remain the leading contenders, with further discussions set to take place over the weekend. However, Cavenagh is currently not in the UK and will not attend these talks in person.
Sporting director Kevin Thelwell is due to officially begin his role on Monday and will take charge of the process moving forward.
Urgency for Appointment Ahead of Crucial Transfer Window
With a vital summer transfer window approaching, Rangers are under pressure to finalise their managerial appointment quickly. The new manager will play a central role in shaping recruitment strategy, building squad chemistry, and defining the tactical approach for the upcoming season.
Davide Ancelotti, currently an assistant at Real Madrid under his father Carlo, brings a wealth of top-level experience, having been involved in multiple Champions League and La Liga triumphs. His understanding of elite football environments could bring a competitive edge to Rangers.
Russell Martin, most recently at Southampton, offers a different but equally compelling profile. Known for his possession-based style and his ability to nurture young talent, Martin has enjoyed success in both the Championship and Premier League, aligning well with the 49ers’ long-term vision for the club.
Both candidates bring unique strengths to the table, and either could help lead Rangers into a modern and ambitious new chapter under the stewardship of the 49ers Enterprises consortium.
