49ers Enterprises Complete Rangers Takeover and Reassure Fans Over Ibrox Name

Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises consortium officially completed their takeover of Rangers on Friday, 30 May, acquiring a 51 per cent stake in the club and taking control at Ibrox. Former chairman Dave King, along with several other shareholders, sold all or part of their holdings to facilitate the deal.

No Plans to Sell Ibrox Naming Rights

With the takeover now complete, the American group faces a busy summer, starting with the appointment of a new permanent manager following Barry Ferguson’s departure. Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin are currently among the leading candidates, though no final decision has been made.

The consortium is expected to explore various strategies to strengthen the club’s financial standing and improve revenue streams. However, one thing they have ruled out is the sale of naming rights for Ibrox Stadium—a decision that will undoubtedly please the Rangers faithful.

Preserving a Historic Identity

Supporters will be heartened to know that the name “Ibrox” will remain untouched. For fans, the stadium is more than just a venue—it’s a historic landmark that embodies over a century of footballing tradition, unforgettable moments, and passionate support.

Renaming the ground for commercial purposes would likely have caused backlash, as it could be seen as undermining the emotional and cultural significance the stadium holds. By choosing not to pursue that route, 49ers Enterprises has shown an early appreciation for the club’s heritage and the importance of keeping fans onside.

This move suggests that the new owners intend to modernise responsibly, respecting the club’s legacy while pursuing growth. By safeguarding the Ibrox name, they’re building early goodwill and trust among the fanbase—an encouraging start to what promises to be a transformative chapter in Rangers’ history.
