Star Centre Reaffirms Loyalty to Home Team Amid European Interest
Suva, Fiji — In a powerful display of loyalty and commitment, Fijian Drua star Iosefo Masikau Baleiwairiki has rejected a massive contract offer from English Premiership Rugby side Luton RFC, choosing instead to remain with the Drua for the foreseeable future.
The 26-year-old centre, widely known as Iosefo Masi, has been one of the standout performers of the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season, finishing as joint-top try scorer for the Drua. His dynamic running lines, ferocious defence, and innate ability to break through tight spaces have made him a hot commodity, with interest from top European clubs steadily growing over the past 18 months.
But despite an offer reportedly worth over $1.5 million FJD per season from Luton — including housing, bonuses, and immediate first-team guarantees — Masi has opted to remain in Fiji, citing family, cultural pride, and unfinished business with the Drua as his primary reasons.
“This is home. I’ve worn this jersey with pride, and I’m not ready to take it off,” Masi said in an exclusive interview with Island Rugby Weekly. “Playing for the Drua isn’t just a job — it’s a calling. It’s about inspiring the next generation of kids from Ba, Labasa, Nadi and beyond. I’m still hungry to win something special here.”
The decision was met with widespread applause from Fijian rugby fans, many of whom had feared losing yet another top local talent to Europe’s wealthier leagues. Masi’s loyalty is being hailed as a statement for homegrown rugby and a significant boost for the Drua, who are working to build a stable and competitive squad amid growing player poaching.
Drua head coach Mick Byrne said Masi’s decision reflects the passion and belief that is growing within the club.
“We are incredibly proud of Iosefo,” Byrne said. “He’s a leader by example, and this is a huge message to the team and to Fijian rugby. The fact that he’s turned down big money from overseas to stay here says everything you need to know about his character and his vision.”
Masi’s current contract was believed to run through the end of the 2025 season, but Drua management has confirmed that negotiations for a long-term extension are already underway, with the goal of securing his services through at least 2027.
Sources within the club suggest that the new deal could include a leadership role within the team and future opportunities to transition into coaching or mentorship roles post-retirement — something Masi has shown interest in.
“Rugby has given me everything,” Masi added. “I want to give back to the game and to Fiji. Right now, that means staying with the Drua and doing everything I can to help us bring a championship home.”
For now, Fijian rugby fans can breathe a sigh of relief — their star centre isn’t going anywhere.
