Rangers Eye Almamy Touré on a Free Transfer as Defensive Rebuild Begins

Rangers are reportedly targeting a move for Almamy Touré, who is set to leave German club Kaiserslautern this summer as a free agent.

With Leon Balogun expected to depart upon the expiry of his Ibrox contract, the Glasgow giants are eager to bring in reinforcements at the back. The 29-year-old Mali international has emerged as a priority candidate, offering defensive depth and flexibility.

According to Africa Foot (31 May), Rangers have entered the race for Touré, but a deal hinges on agreeing personal terms. Should salary negotiations prove successful, the versatile defender—capable of playing both centre-back and right-back—is expected to join the club on a free transfer.

Touré has drawn interest from several other clubs, including Genoa, Trabzonspor, and MLS side Philadelphia Union, making competition for his signature fierce. Despite enduring an injury-plagued season, he has now officially parted ways with Kaiserslautern and is seeking a new opportunity at a top club.

Following the arrival of new owners 49ers Enterprises, Rangers are expected to be active in the transfer market as they reshape the squad for the 2025/26 campaign. A new managerial appointment is imminent, with names like Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin linked to the role.

Touré’s potential arrival would fill the void left by Balogun and loanees such as Neraysho Kasanwirjo, providing tactical versatility and valuable experience. With a reported transfer budget in the range of £20–25 million under the new ownership, Rangers are well-positioned to offer competitive terms to secure the former Bundesliga defender.

Bringing in Touré would represent a smart move for the Gers—low risk, high reward—as they aim to reinforce their defence and build a squad capable of challenging for domestic and European honours under new leadership.
