Robin Propper’s Rangers Future in Doubt After Underwhelming Debut Season

Robin Propper may be on his way out of Rangers after a difficult first season at Ibrox. The Dutch centre-back, who joined the Glasgow giants last summer, struggled to make a significant impact in the Scottish Premiership.

Despite experiencing a mixed run with injuries, the 31-year-old still featured regularly in the 2024/25 campaign. However, his performances failed to live up to expectations, which has cast doubt over his long-term future at the club.

Having arrived in Glasgow with a strong reputation — including captaining a side in the UEFA Conference League — Propper found himself unable to secure a consistent starting role. Both Barry Ferguson and former boss Philippe Clement often favoured Leon Balogun and John Souttar over the summer signing.

Now, with the transfer window set to open, speculation around Propper’s exit is growing. According to Dutch outlet Soccer News (1 June), FC Twente are keen to re-sign their former defender, just a year after he left the Eredivisie for Scotland. Talks are said to be underway internally at the Dutch club, as they assess whether Propper would be open to a return home.

While Rangers currently have several centre-backs on their books, the situation remains fluid. Leon Balogun is due to depart upon the expiry of his contract, and Ben Davies is expected to return from his loan spell at Birmingham City — though his future at Ibrox is also uncertain.

This could complicate the decision-making process for Rangers, who may be hesitant to sanction Propper’s departure without a suitable replacement lined up. Squad depth in central defence remains a concern as preparations begin for the new season.

Whether FC Twente will formalize their interest and whether Rangers are willing to part ways with Propper remains to be seen. The coming weeks could be decisive for both the player and the club as the transfer window unfolds.
