Mitch Marner Breaks Silence on Future: “I Love the Leafs and Hope for a New Deal” Amid Uncertain Exit
In a heartfelt public statement that could offer a glimmer of hope to Toronto Maple Leafs fans, star winger Mitch Marner has broken his silence on his future with the club. While widespread reports suggest that his time in Toronto is drawing to a close, Marner has now made it clear: he’s not ready to say goodbye just yet.
Speaking to media following a charity event in downtown Toronto on Monday afternoon, the 28-year-old Marner expressed deep affection for the only NHL franchise he has ever known.
“Toronto is home,” Marner said. “I’ve grown up here, I’ve played my entire NHL career here, and the fans have been incredible to me. I love the Leafs and everything this organization stands for. I’d love to work out something to stay.”
Marner’s comments come amidst growing speculation that the Maple Leafs are preparing to part ways with the former fourth overall pick, who is entering the final year of his six-year, $65.3 million contract. With a full no-movement clause and a cap hit of over $10.9 million, Marner’s future has become one of the biggest questions of the offseason.
Earlier this month, multiple insiders reported that the Leafs are exploring trade options involving Marner in an effort to shake up their core and create financial flexibility under new general manager Brad Treliving’s vision. Some analysts believe the club is reluctant to let Marner walk as a free agent next summer without receiving value in return.
Despite the uncertainty, Marner appears determined to keep the door open for a potential extension.
“Of course, I’ve heard all the talk. But until I’m told I’m no longer part of this team, I’m a Leaf,” he said. “I still believe we can win here. I want to be part of that.”
Marner, who tallied 26 goals and 59 assists in 78 games this past season, has remained one of the Leafs’ most consistent producers and is widely praised for his two-way play, penalty killing, and chemistry with fellow star Auston Matthews. Still, after another early playoff exit, the pressure to alter the core group has never been greater.
Treliving has yet to publicly address Marner’s future, but sources inside the organization indicate that trade talks have been held with several teams, including the Nashville Predators and Chicago Blackhawks. While Marner’s full no-move clause gives him significant control over any transaction, he has not yet submitted a formal list of preferred destinations.
For now, his message is simple: he wants to stay.
“It would mean a lot to sign a new deal and keep wearing the blue and white,” Marner concluded. “But that’s up to management. I just hope there’s still a path forward.”
Whether that path leads to a new chapter in Toronto or a fresh start elsewhere remains to be seen. But for the first time in weeks, Leafs fans have heard directly from Marner — and his heart is still with the team.
