The Toronto Maple Leafs are once again making headlines in the goaltending department, with reports suggesting the team is on the verge of pulling the trigger on a compelling goalie-for-goalie trade. According to league insiders, the Maple Leafs are set to send Joseph Woll to the Utah Hockey Club in exchange for veteran goaltender Connor Ingram.
This proposed move comes on the heels of Toronto locking down their new starting netminder, Anthony Stolarz, signaling a clear shift in the team’s goaltending hierarchy. With Stolarz now firmly entrenched as the No. 1 option, the Leafs are aiming to restructure their depth chart, and bringing in Ingram to serve as a dependable backup appears to be part of that plan.
Ingram, 28, is entering the final year of a three-year, $5.85 million deal and carries a cap hit of $1.95 million. The Arizona native split time in Utah’s crease last season but was eventually supplanted by Karel Vejmelka as the club’s primary starter. Despite losing the starting role, Ingram posted a 9-8-4 record, a 3.27 goals-against average, and a .882 save percentage — numbers that, while modest, reflect his ability to hold the fort when called upon.
His experience and short-term cap hit make him an appealing option for the Leafs, who are balancing performance with financial flexibility as they attempt to bolster other parts of the roster this offseason. Ingram’s ability to step in on short notice and play stretches of games also provides Toronto with some much-needed insurance behind Stolarz, who himself has dealt with injuries in the past.
On the other end of the deal, Joseph Woll, 26, heads to Utah with untapped potential and a relatively friendly contract. Once considered the future of Toronto’s crease, Woll struggled to stay healthy and eventually lost his grip on the starter’s role. However, his athleticism and upside continue to draw interest across the league, and Utah appears willing to take a chance on the American-born goaltender as they seek a long-term option between the pipes.
The situation in Utah mirrors what played out in Toronto: two capable goalies vying for one role. With Vejmelka’s emergence as Utah’s No. 1, Ingram became expendable. Similarly, Woll’s trajectory was halted by injuries and the arrival of Stolarz, pushing the Leafs to consider a swap that better aligns with their immediate competitive window.
For Toronto, this move could also free up future cap space and provide more stability in net as the team gears up for another postseason push. With Stolarz and Ingram potentially forming the goaltending tandem, head coach Craig Berube would have a balanced duo capable of sharing the workload without overburdening either.
