Cyriel Dessers’ Future at Rangers in Doubt as Russell Martin Plans for Next Season

Cyriel Dessers’ position at Rangers could be in jeopardy as new boss Russell Martin begins shaping his squad for the upcoming season at Ibrox.

The Nigerian striker has played a key role for the Light Blues in recent campaigns, but his inconsistency in front of goal has often frustrated fans.

Greek side AEK Athens are reportedly interested in acquiring Dessers during the summer transfer window. However, it’s uncertain whether they can agree on a fee that meets Rangers’ expectations.

Martin might have to retain the forward for now, as talks with AEK have hit a few stumbling blocks.

AEK Balks at £4m Asking Price for Dessers

According to journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos, Rangers are holding out for a fee of around £4 million for the 30-year-old. In a post on X (June 18), Chorianopoulos noted that AEK Athens are pushing for a lower price.

So far, negotiations between the two clubs have not resulted in an agreement, with Rangers seemingly firm on their valuation of their top scorer from last season.

Dessers’ Role Could Shift to Backup Under Martin

Dessers has become a divisive figure at Ibrox. While some supporters are calling for his sale, others believe he still has a place in the squad next season.

Despite his crucial goals during the previous campaign, questions about his consistency persist. Martin may choose to rely on Hamza Igamane as his main striker, despite the Moroccan’s recent dip in form.

Igamane made a strong impression when he first emerged under former manager Philippe Clement but saw his opportunities limited under Barry Ferguson. Now 22, he remains a promising talent who could thrive with regular minutes and backing from the new manager.

If Dessers isn’t sold this summer, he could still serve as a valuable squad player, providing depth in attack. However, it remains to be seen how the situation develops as the transfer window progresses.
