Russell Martin could soon add a new defender to his Rangers squad, with Bournemouth right-back Max Aarons set to join the club.
The English defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Valencia after falling out of favour under Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola. Now, Aarons appears poised to link up with Martin at Ibrox as Rangers aim to strengthen their defence ahead of the new campaign.
With James Tavernier potentially nearing the end of his time at the club, the Gers seem to be making plans for the future.
Max Aarons to seal Rangers switch on loan from Bournemouth
Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam revealed on X (20 June) that Rangers have reached an agreement with Bournemouth for the 25-year-old to move to Glasgow on a loan deal. It’s understood there’s no option or obligation to buy included in the arrangement.
Martin will be keen to integrate Aarons quickly, with pre-season training set to begin on Monday (23 June).
Kevin Thelwell making moves as Rangers push for more signings
While Martin still places faith in Tavernier’s leadership, sections of the support have been calling for a shake-up at right-back. Dujon Sterling is also an option, though his injury record remains a concern.
Rangers kicked off their summer recruitment with the arrival of Lyall Cameron, who had already agreed a pre-contract deal earlier in the year. Under the guidance of Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, the club is moving more proactively in the transfer market compared to previous seasons.
However, securing Aarons alone won’t be enough. With Leon Balogun departing and Robin Propper potentially on his way out, further defensive additions are likely needed. On top of that, the attacking department has also been weakened following the departures of Vaclav Cerny and Ianis Hagi.
Fans will be hoping the Aarons deal is finalised soon, with more reinforcements expected before the crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos.
