In a dramatic twist to one of the summer’s most anticipated free transfers, highly-rated defender Harry Darling has turned down a reunion with former manager Russell Martin and rejected a move to Rangers, instead choosing to sign for Norwich City under Liam Manning.

The 25-year-old centre-back, who worked closely with Martin during spells at both MK Dons and Swansea City, was widely expected to follow his old boss to Ibrox after his Swansea contract expired. Sources indicated that Rangers were confident of securing the deal, especially with Martin keen on building a ball-playing backline and favouring players familiar with his tactical style.

However, despite the history and a clear pathway to the first team in Glasgow, Darling opted for a fresh challenge with Championship side Norwich City. The move is a significant coup for Canaries boss Liam Manning, who has also worked with Darling previously at MK Dons, and is now spearheading a rebuild at Carrow Road.

The news has not gone down well in Govan, with Rangers fans expressing frustration over missing out on a player many viewed as the ideal fit for the club’s defensive overhaul. Darling, known for his aerial dominance, composure on the ball, and intelligent reading of the game, was seen as a ready-made replacement for outgoing figures in the Rangers backline.

His decision to join Norwich instead is being viewed as a vote of confidence in Manning’s project — and a snub to Martin, despite their long-standing working relationship. It’s understood that Darling was impressed by Norwich’s plans for the upcoming season and the opportunity to be part of a squad with Championship promotion ambitions.

This transfer twist has seen Rangers pivot quickly, with club sources indicating that they’ve intensified their pursuit of Croatian defender Luka Jelenić — a player long admired by the club’s scouting network. The 22-year-old, known for his physicality and versatility, is now a top target for Martin as he looks to rebuild his squad ahead of a vital season at Ibrox.

Darling’s switch also underscores Norwich’s intent to compete at the top end of the Championship and return to the Premier League. With experienced heads like Grant Hanley and Ben Gibson ageing, the addition of a younger, technically gifted defender like Darling signals a changing of the guard in the Canaries’ backline.

Speaking after signing, Darling said: “I’m really excited to join Norwich City. This is a great club with big ambitions, and I’m looking forward to the season ahead. I’ve worked with Liam before, and I know what he expects. I’m ready to give everything to help this team push forward.”

As for Rangers, missing out on Darling may sting, but the summer window is far from over. The hunt for reinforcements continues, and with the Champions League qualifiers looming, Russell Martin will be desperate to bring in key players who are both mentally and tactically prepared for the challenges ahead.

For now, however, it’s Norwich who celebrate landing one of the smartest free transfers of the window.
