He Must Go Before Tavernier: Rangers Flop Set for Exit “Talks” with Philippe Clement
Rangers are reportedly preparing for exit talks with out-of-favour midfielder José Cifuentes, with sources close to Ibrox suggesting the Ecuadorian international is now at the front of the queue to depart — even ahead of long-serving captain James Tavernier, whose own future has been under scrutiny.
Despite Tavernier attracting interest from Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer, Rangers manager Philippe Clement is believed to have made it clear behind the scenes that certain underperforming players, such as Cifuentes, must be moved on first as part of the club’s summer rebuild.
Cifuentes Set for Crucial Talks
Signed from LAFC in the summer of 2023 with high expectations, Cifuentes has struggled to adapt to the pace and physicality of Scottish football. The 25-year-old made just a handful of appearances in the 2024–25 campaign and failed to leave any lasting impact in the Rangers midfield.
According to The Glasgow Record, Cifuentes is now scheduled for “exit talks” with Clement and Director of Football Recruitment Nils Koppen in the coming days. The player is believed to be open to leaving, with interest reportedly emerging from clubs in MLS, Brazil, and the Belgian Pro League.
One Ibrox insider described the situation bluntly:
“He’s just not cut out for the SPFL. It’s not personal, but Rangers need players who can deliver consistently — and Cifuentes hasn’t done that. He must go before anyone even thinks about replacing Tav.”
Squad Revamp in Full Swing
Philippe Clement is believed to be overseeing a major shake-up of the squad after a trophyless campaign, and clearing underperformers off the wage bill is a top priority. Cifuentes, who is on a sizable salary, represents a player whose departure could free up space for more reliable midfield options.
Rangers have already completed a handful of incoming signings this summer, including young Belgian midfielder Noah Sadiki and centre-back Clinton Nsiala, but several more are expected. With speculation swirling over Tavernier’s potential move to the Middle East, Clement is determined not to let key leaders go before addressing deadwood in the squad.
Clement’s Ruthless Edge
The Rangers boss has not been shy in making difficult decisions, and sources suggest Cifuentes is just one of several names on the chopping block. The Belgian tactician wants to trim the squad, inject fresh energy, and refocus the dressing room.
Clement hinted at exits during his post-season press conference, stating:
“Every player must prove their value. The past means little now — we must build a team ready to win from day one.”
Fan Frustration Over Cifuentes
Many supporters have already voiced frustration over Cifuentes’ lack of contribution, with fans calling his signing one of the biggest flops in recent years. Social media posts and fan forums are filled with calls for him to be shipped out quickly, with some jokingly offering to “drive him to the airport.”
As Rangers gear up for Champions League qualifiers and another tilt at domestic honours, the writing appears to be on the wall for José Cifuentes.
Departure talks are coming — and few will be sorry to see him go.
