The Rugby Football League’s head of match officials, Phil Bentham, has issued a formal apology to Castleford Tigers after a video refereeing mistake played a role in their loss to Wigan Warriors.

Castleford were ahead when Wigan successfully challenged a decision following a kick ahead by the Tigers. Footage later revealed that Wigan’s Harry Smith had impeded Josh Simm, slowing down the Castleford winger’s attempt to collect the ball. However, the video referee failed to penalise the interference, stating there was “nothing in it.”

Wigan capitalised almost immediately, with Zach Eckersley crossing the line to put them 18-16 in front. They went on to win 26-20 at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

Tigers head coach Danny McGuire voiced his displeasure after the game, and by Sunday morning, Bentham had reached out to the club to apologise, admitting that the wrong decision had been made.

“It’s important for the integrity of the game that we take responsibility when clear mistakes occur,” Bentham said. “We remain committed to reviewing and improving decision-making each week.”

The Tigers stay in tenth place on the Super League ladder with just four wins from 16 games. Wigan’s win, meanwhile, keeps them four points off league leaders Hull KR and four points ahead of third-placed Leeds Rhinos.

Castleford now turn their focus to a key clash with fellow strugglers Huddersfield Giants on Thursday, while Wigan prepare for a local derby against Leigh Leopards on Friday.
