Conor Coady Closing in on Rangers Move as Leicester Set to Approve Transfer Within 48 Hours
Leicester City defender Conor Coady is reportedly on the brink of joining Rangers, with a deal potentially finalised within the next day or two.
Rangers are in urgent need of defensive reinforcements following Leon Balogun’s departure at the end of his contract. Manager Russell Martin is prioritising additions at the back, especially with a crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos coming up at Ibrox on 22 July.
According to Record Sport (1 July), the Light Blues are closing in on a deal for Coady, and Leicester are expected to sanction the move within 24 to 48 hours. The transfer has gained momentum thanks to Kevin Thelwell, the former Everton sporting director, who is playing a key role in facilitating the move.
Coady, 32, has been on Rangers’ radar for over a year. The club initially hoped to bring him in on loan last summer, but new Foxes boss Steve Cooper opted to keep him after replacing Enzo Maresca. With Robin Propper taking on a defensive role for Leicester, Coady now appears set for a fresh start in Scotland.
Rangers are also pushing to complete a deal for Bournemouth midfielder Joe Rothwell, potentially sealing a double signing to strengthen their squad.
This summer has already seen the arrival of Max Aarons on loan—marking the first signing under the US-led ownership group. Lyall Cameron also officially joined in June after agreeing a pre-contract in the winter.
With Rothwell likely to follow, it’s clear that Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises are backing Martin’s vision for the club. Despite some reservations over bringing in older players from the English leagues, their proven experience could prove invaluable as Rangers aim to challenge Celtic.
Coady, a seasoned England international and a standout performer in the Championship last season during a loan stint at Leeds United, still has plenty to offer. With Thelwell orchestrating the rebuild, Rangers look poised to put together a strong squad, and unless there are more high-profile exits beyond Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers, Martin will have every reason to believe silverware is within reach.
