Russell Martin is focused on assembling a squad strong enough to get past Panathinaikos in their upcoming Champions League clash, with the first leg scheduled for 22 July at Ibrox.

Rangers Nearing Gassama Signing

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has stressed the urgency of strengthening the squad quickly.

Speaking to Ibrox News, Ferguson commented on the delayed transfer of Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama, insisting Rangers can’t afford to waste time with such a crucial European tie looming.

“Rangers need to act fast. That European fixture is just around the corner, and this group still needs time to gel,” Ferguson said. “We’re short on wide options, with some players unproven or sidelined. I’ve heard positive things about Gassama—he’s versatile on either wing, and we badly need more attacking threats.”

Supporters Urged to Stay Calm Over Gassama Delay

Some Rangers supporters have voiced concern over the holdup in Gassama’s move, reportedly caused by internal ownership issues at Sheffield Wednesday. Despite the delays, Gassama is still eager to join the Ibrox side.

Martin, speaking to the press on Friday (11 July), confirmed that Rangers have completed everything on their end and are simply waiting on the Owls to meet the agreed conditions.

Barring further setbacks, the 21-year-old is expected to be available for selection against Panathinaikos.

Gassama brings a more direct style to Rangers’ attacking options, combining blistering pace, confidence in one-on-one situations, and a powerful right foot capable of scoring from range. Though still young, he has the potential to become a vital player for the club—if the deal can be finalized in time.
