Josh Windass could be on his way back to Rangers.

The 31-year-old previously played for the Ibrox side between 2016 and 2018, registering 19 goals and 13 assists in 73 appearances.

Rangers boss Russell Martin is aiming to strengthen his attacking options this summer, and Windass presents a viable target after an impressive campaign with Sheffield Wednesday, where he netted 13 times and contributed six assists.

The Light Blues may now look to capitalise on the Championship club’s financial struggles, having already secured Djeidi Gassama from them earlier in the window.

Windass back on Rangers’ radar after major development

Reports have linked Rangers with a move for Windass, and a recent development could pave the way for his return. Sheffield Wednesday announced on 17 July via their official X account that the player’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent.

That announcement opens the door for Rangers to swoop in and sign him on a free transfer, potentially bringing the versatile forward back for a second spell in Glasgow.

A smart move for the Ibrox outfit

With Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers reportedly attracting interest from European clubs, and with Vaclav Cerny not returning after a loan stint, the attacking department is looking light. Only Oscar Cortes and Rabbi Matondo remain as established options—something that could concern fans.

The club’s new majority shareholders, 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh, might see Windass’s availability as an ideal opportunity to reinforce the squad without spending a transfer fee.

Capable of operating across the forward line and in midfield, Windass could offer valuable experience and flexibility. His familiarity with Rangers and the Scottish game means he could settle in quickly under Martin.

In a summer where smart, aggressive business is crucial to close the gap on Celtic—who finished 17 points clear last season—bringing Windass back could be a shrewd, low-risk move for the Gers.
