Parramatta Eels star makes surprise Championship switch
In a move few saw coming, Parramatta Eels forward Shaun Lane has completed a shock switch to the English Championship, signing with Featherstone Rovers in a deal that brings one of the NRL’s most recognisable figures to the second tier of UK rugby league.
The towering back-rower, known for his rangy running style and offload ability, has been a mainstay in the Eels’ pack in recent years, helping guide the club to the 2022 NRL Grand Final. However, after an injury-disrupted 2024 season and speculation over his long-term future in Sydney, Lane has opted for a fresh start in England.
Surprise move abroad
Featherstone, who have made no secret of their ambition to push for Super League promotion, moved swiftly to secure Lane’s signature after learning he was open to an overseas challenge. Club officials confirmed the 29-year-old has signed a two-year contract and will link up with his new teammates immediately.
Rovers head coach James Ford hailed the signing as a statement of intent:
“Shaun is a player of genuine NRL pedigree and brings the kind of size, skill and leadership that can transform a team. To attract someone of his calibre to the Championship shows how serious we are about reaching the top flight. I have no doubt he’ll become a fan favourite very quickly.”
Lane’s arrival is expected to bolster Featherstone’s forward pack significantly, giving them a ball-carrying threat capable of breaking the line and providing second-phase play — a hallmark of his game in Australia.
Lane’s parting words to Eels fans
Speaking on the Eels’ official website, Lane admitted the decision to leave was not an easy one:
“Parramatta has been my home for a long time and I’ve loved every moment playing in the blue and gold. The club, my teammates, and the fans have been amazing to me. But I feel the time is right for a new challenge and to experience rugby league in a different part of the world. Featherstone have shown incredible ambition, and I’m excited to be part of their journey.”
Eels coach Brad Arthur wished Lane well, acknowledging his contribution to the club over the years:
“Shaun has been a big part of our side both on and off the field. We understand his reasons for making the move and we thank him for his commitment to the Eels. We wish him and his family the very best in England.”
Impact on Featherstone’s promotion push
Featherstone, who narrowly missed out on promotion in 2023, are already considered one of the strongest squads in the Championship. Lane’s signing adds more depth and quality to a team determined to secure a Super League berth at the end of the season.
With his size, agility, and wealth of experience in one of the toughest competitions in the world, Lane’s presence is expected to lift the Rovers’ on-field performances and give them a psychological edge over rivals.
Featherstone fans could get their first glimpse of Lane in action as early as next weekend, when the Rovers face York Knights in a key Championship clash.
