In a bombshell that has rocked the AFL community, Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos is reportedly considering early retirement after suffering what could be a serious pectoral injury in the club’s recent clash against Fremantle.

Daicos, 22, has been a beacon of brilliance since his debut in 2022, winning over fans with his poise, vision, and footballing pedigree. But the usually unshakeable midfielder cut a sombre figure after leaving the field early in Saturday’s match, clutching his chest in visible discomfort. Now, with scan results pending and fears growing about long-term damage, sources close to the club have revealed that Daicos is “genuinely weighing up his future in the game.”

“It’s devastating,” said a Magpies insider. “Nick has given everything to Collingwood, and to think this could be it so early in his career is almost too much to bear.”

The club confirmed on Sunday that Daicos would undergo scans on a suspected torn pectoral muscle. While no official diagnosis has been released, early reports suggest the injury could be more significant than initially feared — potentially requiring surgery and a 4–6 month rehabilitation period. For a player who has already battled through plantar fasciitis during pre-season, the physical and mental toll is mounting.

“This game can be cruel,” a visibly emotional Craig McRae told reporters after the match. “Nick’s a warrior. But he’s also human. He’s had a tough run, and right now, his health and wellbeing are the only priorities.”

Daicos, who was spotted leaving the club’s AAMI Park facility on crutches and with his arm in a sling, declined to comment. However, a family friend disclosed that the young star has been “deeply shaken” by the injury and is seriously considering stepping away from the game — at least temporarily.

“He’s exhausted — physically, mentally, emotionally. He’s not making any decisions just yet, but he’s told those close to him that he’s thought about walking away,” the source said.

The AFL world has reacted with an outpouring of support. Fans, former players, and commentators have taken to social media to express their heartbreak and solidarity with the Magpies prodigy.

“Nick Daicos is everything great about this sport,” tweeted former Brownlow Medallist Patrick Dangerfield. “If he needs time to heal or even step back — let’s just show him love and respect.”

Even long-time rivals paid tribute, with Carlton captain Patrick Cripps saying, “You never want to see a great talent in this much pain. We’re all behind you, mate.”

Whether Daicos ultimately decides to call time on his career or fights through yet another gruelling recovery, one thing is certain: the football world won’t be the same without him. And if this is indeed the end, it will go down as one of the most heart-wrenching what-ifs in AFL history.

For now, the black-and-white faithful hold their breath — and their hearts — hoping their brightest star won’t fade too soon.
