Norwich City have confirmed the return of former Player of the Season Tim Krul, who has signed a three-year contract with the club following his release from Luton Town.

The 37-year-old Dutch goalkeeper is set to begin a second chapter at Carrow Road after a challenging spell at Luton that saw limited game time and back-to-back relegations. Krul had originally joined the Hatters in the summer of 2023, as the newly promoted Premier League outfit looked to bolster their squad. However, he failed to make a single league appearance, playing backup to Thomas Kaminski throughout their ill-fated top-flight campaign and subsequent drop to the Championship and now League One.

Now, with his Luton contract expired and his status as a free agent confirmed, Krul has returned to the club where he enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his career.

Krul made 169 appearances and kept 47 clean sheets during his first spell with the Canaries from 2018 to 2023. He played a crucial role in Norwich’s Championship title wins in 2018–19 and 2020–21, with his outstanding form in the Premier League earning him the prestigious Barry Butler Memorial Trophy as the club’s Player of the Season in 2019–20.

Norwich City sporting director Ben Knapper spoke glowingly about the return of the experienced shot-stopper:

“Tim’s legacy at this club speaks for itself. His professionalism, leadership, and quality were central to our recent successes, and we’re thrilled to bring him back into the fold. With a relatively young squad, his presence in the dressing room and on the pitch will be invaluable.”

The move also offers a degree of continuity for Norwich fans, who had watched Krul leave just two summers ago after losing the No. 1 spot to Angus Gunn. While Gunn remains the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, Knapper hinted that Krul’s role could extend beyond the pitch:

“Tim still has plenty to offer between the posts, but he’s also someone we believe can help mentor the next generation. His passion for this club never faded, and we’re confident he’ll make a big impact both on and off the field.”

Krul himself appeared emotional in his first interview since sealing his return.

“This club has always felt like home. I have so many great memories at Carrow Road, and the fans have always treated me with respect and warmth. When the opportunity came up to come back, I didn’t have to think twice. I still feel strong, I’m ready to contribute, and I can’t wait to get started again.”

Krul is expected to join the squad for pre-season training next month and will likely feature in Norwich’s upcoming summer friendlies as he begins his quest to make an impact once more in yellow and green.

His return comes at a pivotal moment for the Canaries, who are looking to mount a serious promotion push next season. With a blend of youth and experience, and now the return of a familiar face in goal, optimism is building once again at Carrow Road.
