“I’m Not Leaving Norwich City” – Borja Sainz Rejects €13M Atlético Madrid Bid, Eyes €15M Extension to Cement Canaries Legacy

In a powerful statement of loyalty and ambition, Norwich City star Borja Sainz has turned down a €13 million bid from Spanish giants Atlético Madrid, reaffirming his commitment to the Canaries and expressing his desire to sign a lucrative contract extension worth €15 million.

The 23-year-old Spanish winger has been one of the Championship’s standout performers this season, racking up 15 goals and 7 assists in 21 appearances. His scintillating form had caught the attention of numerous top-flight clubs, with Atlético Madrid emerging as the most aggressive suitor. Reports suggested that the La Liga outfit were prepared to match Norwich’s valuation and offer Sainz a return to his homeland in a bid to bolster their wide options.

However, in a stunning twist, Sainz has opted to reject the overtures of Diego Simeone’s side. Speaking exclusively to Canary Yellow Weekly, Sainz explained his decision.

“I’m not leaving Norwich City. This club gave me a platform to grow, to express myself, and most importantly, to feel at home,” Sainz said. “I know the history of Atlético and I respect the opportunity, but I have a mission here. I want to help this club return to the Premier League and establish myself as a legend at Carrow Road.”

Sources close to the club indicate that Sainz has instructed his representatives to begin negotiations on a contract extension that could see him tied to Norwich until 2029. The proposed deal is believed to be worth €15 million in total value, with significantly improved wages and performance-based incentives.

Head coach David Wagner praised the winger’s commitment in a press briefing following the announcement.

“Borja’s decision speaks volumes about his character. He’s not only a phenomenal talent but also a leader in the dressing room. To have someone of his calibre choose to stay and build something here – it’s massive for us,” Wagner said.

The move comes as a major boost for Norwich City, who are pushing for automatic promotion to the Premier League after a strong first half of the Championship campaign. Sainz’s form has been pivotal, often turning tight matches with his flair, pace, and clinical finishing.

Fans have taken to social media to express their admiration, with the hashtag #SainzStays trending across X (formerly Twitter) in East Anglia on Tuesday morning.

Club CEO Ben Knapper also weighed in, noting the club’s intent to reward Sainz for his loyalty.

“We’re building a long-term vision at Norwich, and Borja is central to that. Talks are ongoing and we’re hopeful of announcing an agreement soon. His commitment is a sign that we’re not just a stepping stone – we’re a destination.”

With promotion in sight and their star man staying put, Norwich City fans can dream of a Premier League return with a reinvigorated squad led by a player who has chosen legacy over immediate glamour.

In an era where loyalty is increasingly rare, Borja Sainz’s decision may well become the defining moment of Norwich’s resurgence.
