Steven Gerrard is expected to hold discussions with Rangers in the next 48 hours as the club looks to finalise a dramatic return for the former manager.

Gerrard, who led Rangers to a Scottish Premiership title during his previous spell, has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Philippe Clement on a permanent basis. His potential return comes amid growing momentum behind a takeover bid led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

Since leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq earlier this year, Gerrard has remained based in Bahrain with his family. As reported by Record Sport, a move back from the Middle East could pose logistical challenges. However, Rangers are under pressure to act swiftly as they prepare for a new era and begin assembling a squad capable of challenging Celtic for the title next season.

Incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell isn’t scheduled to begin his duties until next month, so CEO Patrick Stewart is eager to make progress on the managerial appointment as soon as possible.

According to The Daily Mail, Gerrard is expected to meet with club officials in the coming days to potentially agree on terms for his return, with Rangers aiming to confirm their new manager by the end of the week.

Gerrard is reportedly open to taking charge at Ibrox again, and with his UK tax liability no longer an issue—due to the expiration of a time-based tax rule in April—there are no financial obstacles to his return. This situation is said to mirror that of his former Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson, who is likely to depart Ajax this summer and has been linked with a potential player/coach role.

Additionally, former Rangers star Steven Davis has been mentioned as a possible addition to Gerrard’s coaching team.
