Rangers Nearing Managerial Appointment Amid Divided Opinions

Rangers are closing in on naming their next permanent manager, but none of the contenders have sparked widespread enthusiasm among supporters.

Steven Gerrard is reportedly the leading candidate, while Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin are also believed to be under consideration.

With a major overhaul required at Ibrox this summer, many believe the club needs a manager who brings both experience and authority to steer the rebuild.

One figure familiar with the demands of managing Rangers is Gennaro Gattuso — though his name has sparked surprise among fans and pundits alike.

Scott Allan Reacts as Fan Calls for Gattuso Over Gerrard

Despite Gerrard guiding Rangers to the 2020–21 Premiership title and famously ending Celtic’s bid for 10 consecutive titles, some fans remain unconvinced about a potential return.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, one Rangers supporter voiced a preference for Gattuso:

“Gerrard stopped Celtic’s 10 in a row, and I’m grateful. But I’d rather see Gattuso. He’s done it all in football. His knowledge and passion would make players want to run through walls for him.”

Former Celtic midfielder Scott Allan was visibly stunned by the suggestion. Reacting with disbelief, he reminded listeners of Gerrard’s proven track record at Ibrox.

“Gerrard delivered that title Rangers waited years for. He ended Celtic’s run — that counts for a lot,” Allan said.

Gattuso a Risky Prospect for Rangers

While Gattuso has an impressive playing pedigree and has coached at several high-profile clubs, his managerial record raises concerns. He’s currently in charge of Hajduk Split in Croatia but has rarely stayed long in any of his recent roles.

Since 2017, the Italian has managed AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia, and Marseille, but his spells have often ended abruptly and amid turmoil. Such instability could be disastrous for Rangers, particularly with the club potentially entering a new era under 49ers Enterprises, who appear focused on long-term planning.

Given Gattuso’s unpredictable track record, it’s unlikely he’ll be a serious contender for the role at Ibrox.
