Rangers Closing in on Managerial Appointment Ahead of 49ers Takeover
Rangers are nearing the end of their managerial search as the club prepares for a new era under the incoming 49ers ownership.
Interim boss Barry Ferguson is set to step down after a short stint in charge. While the former academy product provided stability at Ibrox, he was unable to generate consistent results during his tenure.
Attention now turns to who will take the reins permanently, with reports suggesting the Glaswegian club has narrowed the field to just two final candidates.
Gerrard and Ancelotti Reportedly in Final Contention
Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti are believed to be the final names on Rangers’ shortlist, having been closely linked to the post throughout May.
Ancelotti, currently assistant to his father Carlo at Real Madrid, is reportedly still interested in the Ibrox job, even amid speculation he could join Brazil’s national team setup.
Gerrard, who led Rangers to the 2020/21 Premiership title, has been without a club since departing Al-Ettifaq in January. His managerial career has stalled since leaving Ibrox, with limited success since his Scottish triumph.
According to Spanish journalist Guillem Balague (21 May), both candidates have undergone interviews with Rangers, impressing the club’s hierarchy. A final decision now lies with the board.
Ancelotti the Stronger Choice
Should the choice come down to these two, the 49ers are urged to back Ancelotti over Gerrard. While Gerrard’s past success at Rangers is undeniable, his recent struggles raise concerns about his ability to deliver consistent results.
In contrast, Ancelotti—though yet to take on a head coaching role—has gained invaluable experience at the highest level and played a key role in Real Madrid’s Champions League success last season.
If Rangers are serious about dethroning Celtic, they’ll need a tactically sharp and battle-tested figure in the dugout. Ancelotti could be that winning influence, while Gerrard’s managerial credentials remain under scrutiny.
