Bookmakers Back Gerrard for Ibrox Return as US-Led Takeover Takes Shape
Steven Gerrard has emerged as the leading candidate to make a dramatic comeback to Rangers, with oddsmakers naming the Liverpool legend as the frontrunner to take the helm under the club’s incoming American ownership group.
Gerrard, who previously managed the Ibrox side, is believed to be a serious contender for the job, with Record Sport learning he’s under active consideration by new director of football Kevin Thelwell and Rangers’ prospective US investors.
Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin are also reportedly on the shortlist as Rangers prepare for a new chapter under Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.
Despite the mounting rumours, Gerrard has been focused on Liverpool’s future under new manager Arne Slot. During a special appearance alongside Rafa Benitez and Sami Hyypia to mark the 20th anniversary of Liverpool’s famous 2005 Champions League triumph, Gerrard discussed the club’s ambitions for the upcoming season.
Speaking on The Reds Roundtable, he said: “How do you build a squad that can dominate? It’s tough. Everyone else is going to strengthen – just look at how far PSG have come in a short time. This summer is crucial to make sure we’re ready to challenge on all fronts again. That’s what Liverpool is all about – preparing for what’s next.”
Meanwhile, changes are also underway at Leeds United, another club tied to 49ers Enterprises. The ownership group plans to issue approximately £120 million in new shares to fund stadium improvements and strengthen the squad ahead of their Premier League return.
As part of this reshuffle, Red Bull’s share in Leeds will drop below 10%, according to City AM. The energy drink giant reportedly opted out of participating in the new share issue but will see its financial obligations rise next season due to increased costs linked to its shirt sponsorship deal.
