Rangers Supporters Await 49ers Takeover Announcement Amid Speculation Over Timing

Rangers fans are eagerly anticipating the official confirmation of the 49ers’ takeover at Ibrox, following a disappointing and lacklustre Scottish Premiership campaign. Despite the underwhelming season, there is a strong sense of optimism among supporters that the club can mount a serious challenge to Celtic next year, thanks in part to the expected arrival of the new American ownership.

The long-anticipated deal with the 49ers group has been in progress for several months, with representatives from the NFL-affiliated investment firm frequently spotted at Ibrox. Their involvement in key club decisions — including the recruitment of a new manager after Barry Ferguson’s departure — underscores their growing influence behind the scenes.

While the deal was tipped for completion as early as April, Rangers have yet to make an official announcement, leaving fans frustrated and eager for clarity.

Pundit and former Rangers defender Craig Moore has weighed in on the delay, offering a possible explanation for the silence. Speaking on Go Radio (May 22), Moore suggested that the club could be strategically holding back the news to overshadow Celtic’s potential domestic treble, which would be sealed with a Scottish Cup final victory.

“Rangers might be ready to go with the announcement,” Moore said. “But maybe they’re waiting, possibly looking to shift focus away from Celtic’s success — if they win the treble. For me, though, it’s time for transparency. Enough of the smoke and mirrors. Just get it done, make the announcement, and move forward. The longer it drags on, the more momentum is lost.”

Moore admitted he wasn’t certain of the club’s intentions, but noted how unusually quiet things have been in the media — adding fuel to the speculation.

Regardless of the strategy, many feel that time is running out. With the season now concluded, every day without confirmation of the takeover is a day lost in preparing for the 2025/26 campaign. The delay affects not only planning for the playing squad and coaching staff but also leaves supporters in limbo.

While Moore remains hopeful that an announcement could come in the days following Celtic’s cup final, pressure is mounting on both the club and the incoming owners to finalise the deal. If the transition isn’t completed soon, Rangers risk falling further behind their Glasgow rivals heading into the new season.

For now, fans remain on edge — waiting not just for an ownership change, but for a new era that they hope will bring renewed ambition and silverware back to Ibrox.
