Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has suggested that Evan Ferguson could benefit from a summer return to his boyhood club Celtic, as the young Irish striker continues to struggle for form and minutes in English football.

Ferguson, 20, has found this season challenging, making just three Premier League starts during loan spells at Brighton and West Ham and scoring only once in 21 league appearances. This marks a steep drop-off from his breakthrough 2022/23 season, when he netted 16 goals across all competitions for Brighton.

Speaking to FruityKing, Goodman believes a move to Parkhead could help reignite Ferguson’s career.

“I was surprised when I looked at Ferguson’s numbers this season,” Goodman said. “Just three Premier League starts between Brighton and West Ham — that suggests his confidence has taken a real hit.

“Back in January, I thought he should be aiming higher, and that’s no slight on the Scottish Premiership. But considering how things have gone, a move to Celtic might actually make a lot of sense.

“He’d get chances, he’d score goals, and that could restore his confidence and bring back the player we saw burst onto the scene at Brighton. Right now, he just needs to play regular football. If Celtic can offer that, I can understand why he’d go.”

Celtic were linked with Ferguson during the January transfer window as they looked to bolster their attacking options, though a move didn’t come to fruition. However, with Brendan Rodgers expected to reshape his forward line in the summer, Ferguson could reappear on the club’s radar.

The striker previously had a trial with Celtic before joining Brighton from Bohemians in 2021 and is a known supporter of the Glasgow giants. If a deal were to happen, it would likely be a loan, with Brighton possibly open to letting the forward leave temporarily to rediscover his form.

Should both club and player feel the timing is right, a return to Celtic Park could be on the cards.
