Midfielder Oisin McEntee has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Hearts when his current deal expires.

The 24-year-old Irishman will link up with the Edinburgh club in time for pre-season after three years at Walsall, where he made 79 appearances. A graduate of Newcastle United’s academy, McEntee previously had a loan spell in Scottish football with Greenock Morton. His move to Tynecastle marks a return north of the border as he looks to take the next step in his career.

Speaking to Hearts TV, McEntee expressed his excitement about joining a club of Hearts’ stature.

McEntee excited by Hearts move

“It’s amazing. I’m really buzzing to be here and to start a new chapter at such a brilliant, historic club,” McEntee said. “Everyone in Ireland, England and Scotland knows Hearts. That reputation definitely drew me here.

“They told me they see me as a midfielder, that they’ve done their research and have a plan for me, which is something I really wanted to hear. So far, everything’s been fantastic and I can’t wait to get going.

“You can expect a hard worker – someone who’ll battle, cover ground, and be composed on the ball.”

Reflecting on his Walsall and Morton stints

McEntee also reflected on his time with Walsall and his earlier loan spell in Scotland.

“My time at Morton was my first taste of men’s football. It was a big learning curve, but I took to it well and really enjoyed it,” he explained. “Walsall was my first permanent first-team club and I loved it there. It’s a great group of lads and a really well-run club. It’ll be sad to leave, but I’m looking forward to what’s next.”

Walsall confirmed the move in an official statement:

“We can confirm that Oisin McEntee will join Scottish Premiership side Hearts upon the expiry of his contract. The 24-year-old made 79 appearances for the Saddlers after joining in 2022 from Newcastle United, scoring six goals – including a memorable brace against Notts County in December 2023. We thank Oisin for his efforts and professionalism and wish him and his family all the best in this new chapter.”
