Plymouth Argyle Prepare for League One Rebuild as Dan Grimshaw Nears Exit

Relegated to League One, Plymouth Argyle have wasted no time in reshaping their squad, already completing three signings. However, the unexpected exit of head coach Miron Muslic to German side FC Schalke 04 has left a sour note amid early summer preparations.

Muslic’s departure is unlikely to be the last major change at Home Park. Several players are expected to move on, with some eyeing a return to higher divisions — and goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw appears poised to be among the first.

According to Sky Sports, Norwich City are closing in on a £600,000 deal to sign Grimshaw, matching the fee Plymouth paid for him a year ago. The transfer would see the Pilgrims break even on the former Manchester City prospect, assuming personal terms are agreed as expected. A medical could take place later this week.

The Canaries are aiming to revamp their goalkeeping options this summer, and with Grimshaw having previously worked under soon-to-be Norwich boss Liam Manning at Lommel SK, he’s seen as a logical addition.

Grimshaw’s Brief Stint at Argyle

Grimshaw, 27, joined Plymouth from Blackpool in 2024, arriving during Wayne Rooney’s tenure. He shared goalkeeping duties with Conor Hazard, getting his most consistent run when Hazard was sidelined early in the season.

Despite a difficult defensive record — just one clean sheet and 56 goals conceded in 24 appearances — Grimshaw was widely seen as one of the squad’s better performers. The defensive frailties in front of him often left him exposed, limiting his ability to truly shine. A move to a more stable defensive setup could provide the platform for him to demonstrate his strong distribution and shot-stopping skills.

Busy Transfer Window Looms for Argyle and Norwich

Both clubs are gearing up for transformative summers. Plymouth are focused on assembling a squad capable of bouncing straight back to the Championship, while Norwich have top-six ambitions in the second tier.

Managerial changes are also in motion. Norwich are set to confirm Liam Manning as their new head coach, while Plymouth face the challenge of replacing Muslic after his sudden departure, which came despite previous reassurances of his commitment. While his exit sparked frustration, many will acknowledge that the lure of managing a club the size of Schalke is difficult to ignore.
