Rangers are aiming to strengthen their defence during the current transfer window, with Leicester City centre-back Conor Coady emerging as a top target.

With Russell Martin newly appointed at Ibrox, he is keen to bring in several reinforcements ahead of the upcoming season. While Kevin Thelwell is known to admire Coady, it’s still uncertain whether Rangers will be able to finalise a deal.

Following Leon Balogun’s departure, Rangers are pushing forward in their pursuit of the experienced England international, who has 10 senior caps.

Rangers Considering Long-Term Offer for Coady

According to the Daily Record (7 June), Rangers are exploring the possibility of offering Coady a long-term deal this summer. Although the club cannot match his current salary at Leicester, they are reportedly willing to compensate with the security of an extended contract.

The Light Blues have already made an enquiry into the 32-year-old’s availability as they assess the feasibility of a move. Coady still has a year remaining on his Leicester contract, though uncertainty surrounding manager Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future at the club could influence negotiations.

Thelwell Must Persuade Coady to Make Ibrox Switch

There are further defensive concerns at Ibrox, with Robin Propper reportedly eyeing a return to FC Twente following a disappointing season in Glasgow. John Souttar’s contract is also nearing its final year, casting doubts over his long-term future.

Previous managers Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson struggled to build a solid defensive core, contributing to inconsistent performances across the campaign.

Rangers supporters will be anticipating a comprehensive rebuild this summer under new ownership by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, who have set aside a substantial transfer budget.

One of the immediate priorities will be reassessing the goalkeeping situation, with Jack Butland having lost his starting role late in the season. James Tavernier’s form has also dipped in recent years, creating a need for a reliable right-back replacement.

Defensively, Jefte has shown vulnerability since arriving, while recurring fitness problems for Dujon Sterling and Ridvan Yilmaz have raised questions about their dependability.

Coady’s experience and leadership could bring stability to the Rangers backline, but further defensive reinforcements are still likely needed if the club hopes to challenge for silverware next season.
