Lawrence Shankland has long been linked with a switch to Rangers, with speculation surrounding the move stretching back several years.
Now 29, the striker didn’t enjoy his most prolific campaign last season but still boasts an impressive tally of 68 goals in 137 games for Hearts. As he seeks a fresh challenge following the expiry of his contract at Tynecastle, transfer rumours have once again placed him on Rangers’ radar.
However, interest from West Brom and clubs in Saudi Arabia may complicate matters for Russell Martin’s side as they look to bolster their attacking options this summer.
Shankland reacts on social media as Rangers seal £400,000 deal
Back in 2020, Rangers were first credited with an interest in Shankland during his spell at Dundee United. After leaving Tannadice for a stint in Belgium with Beerschot, he returned to Scotland in 2022, signing a three-year deal with Hearts — a contract that has now expired.
With the striker now a free agent, Rangers could potentially bring him in without a transfer fee. The Ibrox club have already taken advantage of the free market this summer, having secured the services of Lyall Cameron from Dundee.
Cameron’s switch to Ibrox was officially announced on Tuesday (17 June), with Rangers sharing the news via their Instagram account. Interestingly, Shankland was among those who liked the post — a subtle sign that hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans.
The post also drew reactions from current and former Rangers figures including Jack Butland, Charlie Adam, Alan Hutton, and Glen Kamara, who all engaged with the reveal of Cameron donning the club’s new 2025/26 kit.
Why Rangers should still move for Shankland
It remains a mystery why Rangers have never managed to land Shankland, especially given the striker’s consistent output over the years. Since first being linked with a move to Ibrox, he has scored nine times for Dundee United, eight for Beerschot, and 68 for Hearts.
Given Rangers’ well-documented struggles in front of goal — particularly with Cyriel Dessers’ inconsistent form — it’s surprising that the club didn’t push harder to sign the Glasgow-born forward when Alfredo Morelos began to decline and eventually departed.
Set to turn 30 in August, Shankland may no longer be seen as a long-term option, but his recent dip in scoring was largely due to a deeper, more creative role at Hearts. Despite that adjustment, he still contributed nine goals and 11 assists across 43 appearances last season.
His experience, finishing ability, and free-agent status make him a smart, low-risk option as Rangers aim to reinforce their frontline for the upcoming campaign.
