Kevin Thelwell is poised to take on a more vital role than ever at Rangers this summer following his appointment as the club’s new sporting director.

Tasked with shaping the club’s football operations, Thelwell will collaborate closely with the 49ers ownership group, chief executive Andrew Cavenagh, and new manager Russell Martin as the Govan side enters a new chapter.

After finishing a disappointing 17 points behind Celtic last season—a campaign widely viewed as a failure—Rangers know a repeat performance is unacceptable. Thelwell’s responsibility will be to help the club break free from the poor habits that have led to underperformance in recent years.

Thelwell Targets Smarter Transfer Strategy

The club’s recent record in the transfer market has left much to be desired. While there have been occasional successes, such as the acquisitions of Nico Raskin and Hamza Igamane, Rangers have too often spent unwisely, and the on-pitch results have reflected that.

Now, Thelwell and the club’s new American stakeholders are intent on overhauling Rangers’ approach to recruitment. According to The Scottish Sun (20 June), they aim to implement a more effective and strategic transfer model—one designed not only to bring in quality players but also to safeguard the club’s long-term interests.

There is also a shift in mindset: rather than prioritising short-term profit, Rangers now acknowledge the need to retain and develop key assets like Raskin as part of a broader plan for sustained success.

Revamp Crucial to Catching Celtic

Russell Martin will face immediate pressure to narrow the gap on Celtic, despite this being his debut season in charge. The Bhoys have won 14 of the last 15 league titles, with Rangers’ lone triumph under Steven Gerrard.

Thelwell’s modernised transfer model may not yield instant results, but if executed correctly, it could lead to more strategic and consistent decision-making. Over time, this should enhance the club’s recruitment success and translate into improved performances on the pitch—an essential step if Rangers are to seriously challenge Celtic’s dominance.
