Gordon Dalziel has stated that Rangers would have little chance of defeating Scotland in a hypothetical matchup.
Dalziel and Stephen O’Donnell disagreed with a question on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (19 November) that asked whether the Scotland national team could win the Scottish Premiership.
Dalziel continued to support Celtic to win the championship despite O’Donnell’s contention that the Tartan Army’s individual skill may prevail, but he also noted that the Light Blues would be playing third fiddle anyhow.
“I’ll tell you what, I think Celtic would win and they would be second,” Dalziel remarked.
“So he thinks Rangers would be third, is that what you’re saying?” O’Donnell retorted.
“Oh Rangers aren’t beating that side, I’m telling you now,” Dalziel retorted bluntly.
If Rangers played a Scotland team that was playing well, they would be inconsolable.
Even though the Gers’ best performances this season have probably been outside of domestic competition, it is impossible to imagine the standards they would currently need to meet in order to defeat Scotland.
John McGinn and Andy Robertson’s late goals helped the Tartan Army win their last two games, thus defeating players like them would be extremely difficult for Philippe Clement’s revamped team.
John Souttar, a mainstay for both club and country and perhaps the most reliable Gers player this season, is one player who is currently shining in Scotland’s colours.
Although Souttar would be much missed by both teams’ defenders, the fact that the 28-year-old is the only Bears player playing regularly for Scotland indicates that they are now at a low point.
It’s unclear how much progress Scotland and the Gers will make before the season ends, but Clement should learn from Steve Clarke in his efforts to improve his team’s performance.
