Rangers Confirm Emmanuel Fernandez Signing as Club Issues Aasgaard Transfer Update

Glasgow, July 2, 2025 — Rangers FC have officially confirmed the signing of promising defender Emmanuel Fernandez from Peterborough United, marking another crucial addition to their summer transfer window. The 22-year-old centre-back joins the Ibrox club on a long-term deal, with the fee believed to be in the region of £500,000 plus performance-related add-ons.

Fernandez, who impressed during his time at Peterborough with his composure, aerial dominance, and potential for growth, had attracted attention from several clubs in the English Championship. However, Rangers moved swiftly to secure his signature as manager Russell Martin continues to reinforce his defensive options ahead of a challenging 2025/26 campaign, which includes UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

Speaking to Rangers TV, Fernandez expressed his delight at joining one of Scotland’s most prestigious clubs:

“This is a massive opportunity for me. Rangers is a huge club with incredible history and ambition. I’m here to give my all for the badge and to grow under the guidance of a top coaching staff. I can’t wait to play at Ibrox in front of those amazing fans.”

Fernandez is expected to provide depth and competition across the defensive line following the departures of Leon Balogun and John Souttar earlier this summer. He will link up with fellow defenders Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, and new signing Jefte, giving Martin more tactical flexibility as he reshapes the squad.

In a related development, Rangers have also issued an update regarding their ongoing pursuit of Wigan Athletic midfielder Thelo Aasgaard. The 22-year-old Norwegian has been heavily linked with a move to Glasgow in recent weeks after standout performances in League One and at the U21 international level.

A club spokesperson confirmed that negotiations with Wigan are “ongoing,” and that Aasgaard remains a player of “strong interest.” However, no agreement has yet been reached, with Wigan holding out for a fee close to £2 million. Rangers, reportedly, are hopeful of concluding a deal in the coming days but are prepared to walk away if the financial demands stretch beyond their valuation.

Manager Russell Martin commented briefly on the situation:

“Thelo is a talented player who we believe could bring something different to our midfield. Talks are happening, but we’ll only do the deal if it makes sense for us. There’s still time in the window.”

Rangers are expected to remain active in the transfer market over the coming weeks, with further additions likely in midfield and attack. The club’s transfer strategy has centered on recruiting young, high-upside talents capable of immediate impact and long-term development.

With Champions League qualifiers against Panathinaikos looming later this month, fans will be eager to see how quickly the new faces, including Fernandez, can adapt and contribute.

As things stand, the Rangers rebuild is taking shape, and the next few weeks could be pivotal in determining just how competitive the squad will be in the season ahead.
